TOWARDS A THEORY OF DREAMS : Dreams have many
and complex meanings. It would be a lie to say that dreams are easy to understand.
Throughout the ages people have hinted how dreams can be linked to other worlds
and psychic phenonoma. That maybe true in some cases yet the best way to really
understand dreams is to recognise the importance of the brain and the functioning
of the mind.
When you start trying to decipher a dream first try to make the assumption
that it in some way represents your thoughts about the previous day. In particular
the dream represents thoughts which have been processed since the last time
you were asleep. Certain brain functions take place during sleep. Theta waves
and betawaves only appear in the brain at nighttime during sleep. These waves
represent the brains need to process through memories that have been stored
in short term memory banks during the day. Then at night we start to process
through these. We organise all the thoughts and reorder them in order to take
account of all new information. Then during the REM stages of sleep these
new conclusions and feelings are played out in 'little plays'.
Dreams then represent our higher intuitional thinking on issues relevant at
the time of the dream. Many people make the mistake of linking dreams to vast
and major issues. Thats true in some cases yet in reality dreams can be about
seemingly trivial and mundane issues. In life we need peace of mind and stability.
So its best that we get along with as many people as possible. Lets assume
for instance that you have a dream about a nieghbour whom you do not get along
with. You may mistakenly believe that this is probably about something else(
an abstract dream with a deep meaning). You may wonder why you have a dream
about someone who plays a minor role in your life. But in reality this relationship
is more important than you think. We need to keep on good terms with people
around us and getting along with people helps give us peace of mind. So if
we pay full attention to little problems as they arise then this helps us
live happy and ordered lives.
Dreams then are often about the previous day. They are also very much linked
to new conclusions and new ideas. So actually dreams are not so difficult
to interpret after all. They often refer to a specific time period(the day
before) and so this enables you to pinpoint their meaning. Indeed dreams represent
the news headlines of everything that has been on your mind. One good tip
is to write down several quotes that capture your thinking right now. For
instance, write down some quotes like
"Yesterday my sister was behaving strangely. She seems to be very quiet
and withdrawn. I wonder if there is something wrong".
"I want to adopt a new and fresh style in writing my english essay for
college. I have been thinking over exactly how I want to approach it"
"I was fantasizing yesterday about that girl I really feel attracted
to"
"I wonder how I will cope with my maths exam tommorrow"
"My foot seems to have recovered slightly. Maybe I could start up jogging
again"
If we make the assumption that dreams are often about brain functions and
the processing of new data then dreams will link to issues and conclusions
like those quoted above. The connection between real life and the dream symbols
will often be very difficult yet the connection is there. So try to anticipate
what issues will trigger a dream. Many good dream interpretations will merely
quote the dreamer back to themselves. A dream reprsents new thoughts and feelings
and often the dreamer will quote the thoughts which are fresh off the press(the
latest news).
If one single issue has been dominating your mind then thats likely to cause
a dream. That issue may be anything. You may have been really annoyed by someone
the previous day who managed to really get under your skin by acting in a
petty and bureaucratic way. You may have got into an argument with someone.
You may be thinking intensely about the day to come and a wortk assessment
meetng with your boss. You may have been watching a film the previous night
which really got your mind thinking.
Dreams represent clarifications in our mind. So try to spot the issues that
your mind has been trying to clarify. For instance "yesterday I was thinking
a lot about my boss and the reason I really dislike her is that she behaves
so nastily but then expects us to be so nice back". In such a way the
dream mind has clarified precisely why we dislike someone.
Often dreams play out some principle or idea that you have just learnt. For
instance a man had a dream about ancient battles. He had recently become interested
in military history. The dreams though played out the various principles and
ideas he had learnt. For instance the dream featured brutal discipline and
executions against soldiers who disobeyed orders. The dream represented a
practical examples in which these principles should be applied. So the meaning
of the dream was probably simply "I have been learning about military
history and now I realise the importance of discipline to an army. Without
order an army turns into a rabble".
If a dream represents new thinkings and new conclusions then look for pivotal
moments in your emotions. For instance think of that moment when trust turned
to distrust. Think of that moment when you realised that you would decided
to give up on some task. There will generally be a reason behind these changes
of heart. Try to write down what the reasoning is such as "I decided
to give up because no one is really listening to my ideas. they do not respect
me".
One good technique to understand dreams is to see in which direction your
mind is going. Are you thinking about yesterday? If thats the case then your
dreams will probably reflect changes in thinking and emotions. If your mind
is loooking forward to the next day then try to concentrate on these issues.
If you were lying awake in bed worrying aboiut something the next day then
its those worries that the dream probably represent.
