DREAM DICTIONARY : This dream dictionary is based upon hundreds of real dreams and has been meticulously researched. However, the only person who can truly identify the cause of a dream is the dreamer. Use the questions and quotes on this page to help you find out what has triggered your dream.
SUICIDE : If you have a dream about committing suicide then it is obviously very disturbing. Yet its meanings may not be so bad. Dreams tap into situations where we feel similar emotions. Several suicide dreams in our study took place when the dreamer had been thinking about 'giving up' on some relationship or project. Thats identical to the feelings of someone who is suicidal - you just want to give up. Its the same feeling but just much more extreme in the case of a depressed and suicidal person. But that is how dreams work. The mind obviously used the suicide to show the strength of feeling as the dreamer was completely dejected with a project and simply had to give up.
Suicide may link to mental illness but you need not fear such dreams. They merely reveal emotions that you are obviously aware of. They may show that you feel a total lack of purpose. You may feel very unhappy and even very depressed. One dreamer who had a suicide dream had been feeling suicidal. But anyone that desperate will obviously be already aware of their unhappiness. The dream will not shock them. Its probably not a premonition of what is to come. Dreams will often reflect the choices available to us - and if you are that desperate then your mind may toy with the idea of suicide.
One dream in our study occurred the day after the dreamer had been very reckless and acted in a way which was sure to end up in total failure. In real life if someone acts very recklessly then we say that their actions were suicidal.

Below you will see a series of quotes. Each quote represents the meaning
of a particular dream(these are all dreams where the meaning is understood
totally). For instance one dream may have meant that the dreamer was having
trouble at work. In that case the quote may simply be "There is a bad atmosphere at
work". Some information is included about which dream symbols were included
in the dream(within the squares brackets). Often a sample dream is included
which shows you how the dream interpretation was reached.

ESSAY : What is the symbolic meaning of suicides in dreams?
People get nervous with suicide dreams because they feel it maybe a premonition.
But in most cases it simply captures a very mild form of the emotions involved
in suicide. Mostly it captures the feeling that you have just totally given
up on something. You may have tried everything.
Generally suicide in dreams links to a feeling that you have given up on
ever achieving something. You maybe totally exasperated and feel you
have tried as much as you could have. E.g.
"I had a fight with my boyfriend but later I feared that he might react
by just GIVING UP"[Dream Dictionary - fear girl may commit suicide dream][the
quote on which this dream is based upon appears in full at the end of this
article]
"I will continue to live with my boyfriend but really deep down I have GIVEN
UP thinking it will ever be a happy relationship"[Dream Dictionary - girl commits
suicide dream]
"I have tried so hard to get along with everyone at work - but now I
just GIVE UP"[Dream Dictionary - a dream about a bridge famous for suicide
dream]
"I just so love being a police officer but I have been laid off and the
chances of getting back in are not good. I guess I should just GIVE UP"
[Dream Dictionary - police deal with suicide dream dream]
"I know the decision has been taken out of my hands. Its pointless thinking
about it. If the decision is taken that I should live with my dad not my mom
then thats the decision. I have just GIVEN UP thinking about it. Its not in
my control then why bother"[Dream Dictionary - suicide dream dream]
"I was trying to get on with everyone. But the situation at work has
got out of hand. I have GIVEN UP trying to calm people down. Its just a poisonous
atmosphere"
Obviously though suicide may link with desperate feelings and depression.
It may show that you feel emotionally lost. If the dream includes feelings
that portray total depression then yes the dream may link to your emotional
state. E.g.
"I have been so desperate recently. I keep feeling so depressed"[Dream
symbol - about to commit suicide dream]
"A friend of mine recently commited suicide. It is really shocking the
depths of despair that he must have felt. I did not realise what was going
on in his head"[Dream Dictionary - burn marks around my friends neck]
"I used to get suicide dreams. I used to self harm and got depressed.
I do not get the dreams anymore. I have more direction in life now and know
what I want to do"[Dream Dictionary - recurring suicide dreams]
In real life we often use the expression "that was suicidal"
when refering to an act that was bound to end up in failure. E.g.
"I simply followed what my mother said and crossed over the lanes. It was very VERY DANGEROUS and it could have ended up in a serious accident"[Dream symbol - three guys commit suicide]
Suicide may also mean that you have been acting irresponsibly and in a
self destructive way. E.g.
"I know I have to straighten my life out - my present lifestyle is SELF DESTRUCTIVE. I need to act more responsibly"[Dream Dictionary - slitting
wrists]
"I have been thinking about my friend who recently died. It was such
a WASTE and he could have prevented it if he had looked after his health much
more "[Dream Dictionary - friend committing suicide]
"I am a professional singer and constantly take risks. Those around me constantly try to get me to take a more cautious route "[Dream Dictionary - People telling me to jump from tall building]
--------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Try to think of dream symbols as words. Think of suicide
in dreams as representing the phrase "giving up". Then try to write down a
few quotes that capture how you feel about long term and important issues
in your life. Then write down several quotes which capture your feelings about
anything that happened the day before the dream. Think of things like "I have
been worrying about my exams. I need to try harder", or "I said some bad things
to my boyfriend last night - I just hope he does not just give up on our relationship",
or "I have been trying to choose a new dress for the summer dance". Now look
through those quotes again and see where the phrase "giving up" seems relevant
in any way. If there is a strong connection then that could be what your dream
is about.

SAMPLE DREAM
--------------------------------------
THE DREAM I'm in a small, wooden planked, dimly lit room with a friend
of mine. There is a small square window on the wall opposite me. In the middle
of the room there sits a fire extinguisher. There is no fire, for some reason
I know I must use it. But before I used it, I need to add a chemical inside
the extinguisher. Then I use it, but it shows no sign of being used. The only
way I can tell that I did anything was by how dizzy I was getting and by how
strange the room began to look. Then I open the door so my friend and I can
get out of the fume filled room and I gain the knowledge that people use the
same chemical I used in fire extinguishers in order to commit suicide. I was
shocked at this information. And then I moved on.
THE REALITY The night the dreamer had this dream she had a fight with her
boyfriend. She subconsciously feared that he might leave her. She thought
afterwards that she was being a bit "dizzy" and silly. That she had accused
him of using her. These are all things that she regretted and realised that
she was not seeing things clearly.
DREAM ANALYSIS Suicide in dreams can generally be quite disturbing. But
often dreams will use a symbol in a milder form. Here the symbol captures
the same emotions of suicide in that you are so exasperated that you feel
the need to give up. Here that captures the dreamers worries about her boyfriend.
The chemicals are a symbol of reaction. So the dreamer fears that her boyfriend
will react in a way to the fight and just give up. Placing those symbols together
it captures her essential feelings about this in that she feared he would
"react" by "giving up" on the relationship.
The dizzyness maybe symbolise her own lack of clarity of thinking when she
was arguing with her boyfriend. That she was literally being silly and acting
in a dizzy fashion.
The dream also seems to concentrate quite a lot on the words "BEING USED".
Maybe that symbolises one theme of the argument. She was "being used". Dreams
will occasionally use little starnge metaphors like that.
The other symbols are not so easy. Maybe the fumes stand for anger - fuming.
They could also stand for a bad atmosphere that has been created.
