One feature of a castle is its strength. One dream in our study seems to be symbolic of confidence. The dreamer valued the recent help and support from others and the castle seems to represent that confidence. Its strength and dominance reflected the dreamers newly found confidence.

A castle is very strong but the strongest and most confident will not fear to walk outside the huge walls. If you hide behind a castle walls then it may represent a cautious outlook. Several dreams in our studies took place when the dreamer was feeling cautious. One dreamer was trying to pursue a cautious path and was especially trying not to offend someone. So if caution was present in your outlook then this is maybe what your castle dream symbolises.

Castles are above all very defensive objects. They are designed to put up the stiffest defence. One castle dream occurred the night after the dreamer had put up a stiff resistance against someone. He had been put under heavy pressure to do something but resisted this pressure at all costs. So it seems the castle represented the wish to resist someone.

Castles are also highly defensive structures. It seems that they could be symbols of your own personality. One castle dream occurred at a time when the dreamer felt very defensive. He realised that he was putting up barriers against the world. This was due to the fact that he felt undervalued. Other dreams seemed to link to recent feelings of being undervalued. Another dreamer was realising how he had overcome his defensiveness - a friend at college had helped him open up. So dreams may link to the general theme of defensiveness - either a new tendency to put up barriers or a newly found ability to overcome it.

One dream recorded by Carl Jung seems to link to this type of meaning. Jung had been thinking about his own inability to understand a patient. He had a dream of looking up at this patient on the castle walls. The castle seems to represent the patients inaccessibility rather than defensiveness. Jung was thinking about why he could not understand his patient. In the dream he had to look up - which hinted at his own tendency to look down upon patients. So in effect the dream was about Jungs own weaknesses.

Below you will see a series of quotes. Each quote represents the meaning of a particular dream(these are all dreams where the meaning is understood totally). For instance one dream may have meant that the dreamer was having trouble at work. In that case the quote may simply be "There is a bad atmosphere at work". Some information is included about which dream symbols were included in the dream(within the squares brackets). Often a sample dream is included which shows you how the dream interpretation was reached.
ESSAY : What is the symbolic meaning of castles in dreams?

Castles have huge walls and are strong. There main qualities are strength and the ability to withstand attacks. What exactly does that mean in practical dream interpretation?

Castles may symbolise people or circumstances that have made you feel more confident. E.g.

"Well the people I have met there have all been friendly and I must admit they have STRENGTHENED MY CONFIDENCE in myself" [Dream Dictionary - castle ][the dream this quote refers to appears in full at the end of the article]

Castles can be used to show how you are acting cautiously and where you do not want to make any mistakes. E.g.

"I think we need to pursue a CAUTIOUS PATH and make sure nothing goes wrong"[Dream Dictionary - castle ]

"I just feel I have got to be CAUTIOUS - I think I know how she is feeling and I do not want to offend her. "[Dream Dictionary - Church that resembles a castle ]

"if bird flu breaks out then everyone will make their homes into FORTRESSES. The streets will empty. They will be very cautious" [Dream Dictionary - pictures of castle in houses]

Castles may symbolise your approach to something. They show you are trying to find the best way of doing something.

"I think I have just got to experiment and find the STRONGEST APPROACH" [Dream Dictionary - castle ]

Castles are also strong and will resist attacks and can symbolise moments when you will resist others at all costs. E.g.

"Well she made me do it. But I didn't like it and put up STIFF RESISTANCE "[Dream Dictionary - castle ]

But castles can also symbolise your own general defensiveness. E.g.

"I have got to stop being so defensive. Its like I put up a BARRIER against the world. But I feel so undervalued"[Dream Dictionary - castle ]

"Before I met my friend at college I was unable to talk openly with anyone. She tells me everything and I feel I can open up with her"[Dream dictionary - My friend saves me from a castle]

"I was feeling a little undervalued yesterday. I was becoming very defensive in my own mind. Today I feel a lot better"[Dream dictionary - railway heading straight for a castle]

Castles are difficult to get into so may symbolise strong defences and inaccessibility in some way. E.g.

"I find it difficult to understand my patients dreams. I find it difficult to get inside her mind"[Dream Dictionary - looking up at castle towers at patient]
THE DREAM - I am up by the castle and start running downwards. I see Wayne who I know a bit. I was examining some walls of this building. There were smears coming down. Later I run away with some nut. I am heading towards the river. I can jump across - I step over the river then the makeshift bridge breaks apart.

THE REALITY The dreamer was making some major changes to her life. She wanted to end her involvement with a group of people who she felt she no longer were in her best interests. She wanted to spend time on other things. This was a decisive moment and once this choice was made then it would be difficult to reverse.

DREAM ANALYSIS This dream is a river dream. Rivers are good points to start off at. They represent flows of energy and effort - a motivation towards some task or project. So this represented the time she wanted to spend on various activities. The crossing of the river is the vital moment - this symbolises a change (literally a crossover point) to a new set of motivations.

However, the bridge breaks apart. There is an old saying which says that you should not burn your bridges - indicating that the dreamer must move to a new situation without upsetting her old friends. The earlier part of the dream was picking up on the advantages of her large group of friends who offered strength and support - symbolised by the castle. The smears represent the dreamers current thinking about this group of friends - which tended to be largely negative. The dreamer was then running away from some NUT - this probably represented her understanding that she was mad to want to ditch a perfectly good group of friends for a not very good reason.
THE DREAM I dreamt that my friend Jan saved me from a castle.

THE REALITY The dreamers friend had become very close and they found that they were able to talk about most subjects freely and openly.

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I do not feel on the defensive with Jan. I can talk openly and we share secrets. I feel like she is a true friend"

DREAM ANALYSIS A castle is a fortress. In dreams it can link to many things. But often it can symbolise caution and defensiveness. In this case the meaning is quite straightforward. The dream is linked to a good friend so in some way its likely to link to their relationship.

So here the dream shows that the dreamer feels she has been able to break down barriers and talk in ways that she does not normally do. She was able to share secrets and problems. There was a strong bond of trust between them.

Symbolic Meanings
CASTLE : "The dreamer was able to be less defensive and openly was able to talk about problems with her friend"
