DREAM SYMBOL STUDIES : Real dreams featuring tornadoes
THE DREAM
It was an unfamiliar town and I spotted a tornado off in the distance, heading our way. Grabbing the owner of a home and her son, I instructed we should go into the basement of their house. The basement had a sliding glass door where we could see what was happening. I realized the house was airborne. I tried to move toward the inside wall near the stairs and away from the glass doors and grab onto something secure. The piece of plumbing I tried to use for support turned out to be plastic and very pliable, thus offering no support. I then woke up in a fetal position, holding my breath.
THE REALITY The day before the dreamer had a talk with her sister. Her sister was trying to get rid of an unwanted guest at home. She had moved in and had taken over the home and become very abusive. The dreamer was consulted on how best to achieve this.
THE INTERPRETATION
Dreams are often about recent dilemmas. They can therefor be about very specific matters. The dreams may represent how best to achieve some given outcome. The dreaer in this case mentioned a conversation the dreamer had had about how to get rid of an unwanted houseguest. Something like this can trigger a dream. Its just a matter of trying to work out what the different symbols could mean.
If the dreamers sister tries to evict an unwanted guest then this can obviously cause a huge scene. The tornado shows just how strong the dreamer feels that this eviction would cause. So its obvious that her sister is facing a tornado liek response.
Clues about how the dreamer feel her sister should deal with this are also revealed. The sliding door signifies the need to keep an eye on what is happening. So perhaps the dreamer feels her sister should approach the issue cautiously watching constantly for a bad reaction.
But the dream also reveals how the dreamer feels about how difficult a task this was. The plastic pipe shows that she probably she is aware that this is a very difficult situation. That the reaction of her sisters houseguest would be bad.
It is often thought that dreams offer us advice. Its likely that this dream shows the dreamers assessment of this problem. Yet dreams are not a magic wand. They merely reveal our inner intuitions. This dream probably shows that the dreamer has not got any good advice. She is aware that if her sister asks her unwanted houseguest to leave it will cause a huge response.
Dream Symbol
BASEMENT : A place of safety during tornadoes
SLIDING DOOR + SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING : Approach things cautiously and watch for any reactions
TORNADO : The arguments with his girlfriend
PLASTIC PIPE : The dreamer feels she can not offer any real help in solving this dilemma. It would cause a huge reaction. Her sister would not have anything to hold onto.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "My sister asked me how best to get rid of her unwanted houseguest. I told her to be as cautious as possible but I know it will not be easy. "

THE DREAM
I saw that I was in a car on an unknown road but all of a sudden, when I looked outside, there was big funnel cloud all the way from the sky to the ground. I did not see it moving though. It was like looking at a picture.
THE REALITY The dreamer was having some problems at my work for the last week. It seemed as if there is something new every day.
THE INTERPRETATION Dreams come to us at pivotal momments. They come at momments which seem to have meaning. Perhaps we are spotting some new pattern forming in our minds. Clearly this dreamer was able to link stress at work to the tornado dreams. Normally we can deal with stress. It comes occasionally into our lives. This dream comes at a pivotal point. The dreamer is spotting a pattern at work. Suddenly things seemed to have got a lot worse. The stress and problems are continuous - this is new. This is what the dreamer has spotted. This dream is what has resulted. It shows that the stress or problems have been noticably bad or seem continuous in a way in which they have never previously been.
Dream Symbol
PICTURE : Imagination - the dreamer is picturing the problems at work as getting worse
TORNADO : Stress caused by problems at work
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am having problems at work right now. Its really like there is something new to cope with every day "

THE DREAM
I had a very vivid dream about four tornadoes touching down right outside my house. My dream changed right when I was bracing down as one of these tornadoes was about to pick up my house. I then dreamed of a talking head hovering above a soup pot on a stove. It was talking gibberish and kept defacating out of its mouth. It kept talking gibberish in between sessions of crapping out of its mouth into the pot on the stove. The head was surrounded by a sitcom type family in a middle class house that you would most likely see if you lived in the 1940s. This scene was complete with its only laugh track and a creepy little maid that I couldnt understand what she saying.
THE REALITY The dreamer had been having frequent yet pointless arguments with his girlfriend over the phone. He spent most of the day thinking about it.
THE INTERPRETATION Dreams use symbols to express how we feel about real life situations. Tornadoes are very dangerous. In real life they can easily express our feelings about a situation where we feel that same need to hunker down until the danger passes.
Its likely that the dream shows how negatively the dreamer feels about his girlfriend during such arguments. The gibberish in the dream probably represents her inability to make sense. Though it may represent a judgment about both the dreamer and his girlfriends behavior. They both talked gibberish.
The sitcom is an unusual symbol. Perhaps this could symbolize the dreamers real life thoughts. Perhaps he views the arguments as ridiculous and totally not funny(just like a corny old sitcom).
Dream Symbol
TORNADO : The arguments with his girlfriend
GIBBERISH : The dreamer obviously feels his girlfriend does not make sense arguing about petty issues.
SITCOM : The dreamer perhaps sees this as a corny and ridiculous and simply not very funny(like 1950s sitcoms)
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I have booked tickets to return home. But I am absolutely dreading the flight. I do not know what I can do - my two kids will cause havoc."

THE DREAM
I dreamt I was on a beach. I was there to lay in the sun and relax, but the beach I was on was dark and cloudy. I could see in the far distance that the beach across the bay was sunny and peaceful. So I started the long walk to get to the other side. I noticed that some of the people had the same idea. So there we all are walking across the beach. The sand was dry and fluffy and really hard to walk through. I started to think that maybe it wasnt a good idea to walk this far, but feeling like it was too late to turn back, when all of a sudden two tornados come out of the sky. One of the tornados is pretty steady. its hovering out in the bay and doesnt seem threatening at all. The other tornado is spinning franticly, its darker in color and is heading right for us. Of course we all start running away, but the sand is making it exhausting. (This is where the dream ended the first two times)
Dream continued....the third time.
Im trying my hardest to make it out of the sand. I looked up and saw a beach house ahead. "I think I can make it" I tell myself. The adrenalin kicks in and Im digging my heels, toes, and hands into the sand. Sand is flying everywhere! I realize that its not from me though I can feel the wind from the crazy tornado. I reach the house, but its locked and all boarded up. Im looking around for some where to hide. Out of the sand comes three people. I tell them its locked and theres no way in. One of the men in the group points to the ground. "Under the porch!" He yells. We all dive under the porch. We are military crawling underneath the house. Just when we make it to the the middle the tornado hits. I can feel it tearing chunks from the house, but the foundations seem to be holding on strong. We are waiting for it to pass, but it just hovers over the house. The vibrations and the roaring from the tornado seem to be saying something. There is a voice in the tornado! It is so loud it is very hard to hear what its saying. I finally realize what its saying, but so do the other people.
"I want you and only you! Lindsey!"
I looked at these people in disbelief. I decided to surrender myself to the tornado. Crawled out from underneath the house. The tornado consumed me. I flew up into the air only to find clear skies and a peacefulness come over me. I looked down to the beach. It was sunny as well. Then I woke up!
THE REALITY The dreamers was a stay at home mom with two children under three. The eldest has ADHD and causes destruction where ever she goes. She clings onto her mother ever since her father left to serve his first tour in the army. The dreamer had the dream three times. They begun around the time she booked some tickets to return to America from Afghanistan. She was dreading the flight with two children under three.
THE INTERPRETATION With dream symbols like tornadoes its best for the dreamer to ask themselves what the tornado represents in the dream. What or who is tornado like? What situation is as stressful or chaotic as that. This dreamer had a clear idea what her dream meant. She had two children both under the age of three. They are often tornado like. This was especially the case since her husband left on his tour of duty in Afghanistan. She virtually became a single parent overnight. She was unable to relax.
The dreamer was even able to say which tornado was which. The first tornado was more predictable and represented her one year old. The second tornado was more destructive and represented her two year old who was more difficult to cope with as she has ADHD.
Often interpreting dreams is about testing out various little theories. In this case its reasonable to assume that the two tornadoes do represent her two children. Then we look for more links. In this dream there is a very good link. The tornado speaks to the dreamer saying ". I want you and only you! Lindsey". These words were something that her two year old would say. She had recently become very clingy since her father had left on his tour of duty. Given a link like that we can say quite conclusively that this dream is indeed about her two "tornado like" children.
Dreams can be very specific. This dreamer was able to link this dream especially to her flight home to america. This was a fifteen hour flight which would obviously be very chaotic with two children under the age of three. The dreams began around the time she booked the flight.
What exactly do the dreams mean? We maybe able to gauge what thoughts have been going through the dreamers head concerning this issue. At one point she is with the military. This probably represents her wish to act in a bold way in trying to prepare for the tornado. Yet later she just gives in. Looking at how these symbols react we see how she is feeling. Perhaps she wants to prepare for this flight and try to do the best that she can to control things. Yet it seems that she is aware that whatever she does its going to be a nightmare and the tornado will win - consuming her. Many dreams are about how we try to form a stategy. In this dream the dreamer perhaps has realised that whatever she does it will probably fail. Two children on a plane for fifteen hours will be difficult.
Many people feel incorrectly that dreams represent advice. Thats not really the case. Dreams represent our thoughts. Our thoughts tend to simply assess a problem. Here the dreamer has made an assessment about the coming flight home. Yet she has concluded that whatever she does it will still be a nightmare.
Dream Symbol
FIRST TORNADO : Representing the dreamers one year old child.
SECOND TORNADO : More chaotic and destructive - representing the dreamers less predictable child who has been diagnosed ADHD.
MILITARY : The dreamer is trying to be as disciplined and prepared as she can - she is thinking out what is the best approach to this oncoming problem.
TORNADO SPEAKS : The tornado talks just like her two year old. She is very clingy.
GIVING INTO TORNADO : The dreamer wants to prepare for the chaotic flight home yet feels she will just have to give in to her children. Whatever she does it will be a nightmare.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I have booked tickets to return home. But I am absolutely dreading the flight. I do not know what I can do - my two kids will cause havoc."

THE DREAM I am looking at the sky and see a tornado forming, then another,
then another, mean while I am running dodging these tornadoes and trying to
avoid them, then I am heading to this home, which somehow I know this place,
and I run up the stairs into the home, and run into the basement to try and
find shelter from the tornados, then all of a sudden there is a little girl
with me in the basement, and I tell her to grab hold of the pole as tight
as she can, then the heavy winds start tearing the floor and I grab the little
girl and place her between me and the pole to protect her from flying off
into the air, and I look up and the tornadoes are surrounding the home, there
is at least five or more tornadoes, and I hold on even more and start praying
the lords prayer, and I wake up.
THE REALITY The dreamer life was going through a lot of changes. She was leaving
home to be on her own. She was a bit scared and uncertain about her future
and was feeling insecure about being on her own. She had this fear of failing
and ending up back home.
THE INTERPRETATION Tornadoes can often link to changes taking place within
our lives and to stress generally. In this case the source of the changes
and stress is surely linked to moving away from home for the first time.
The little girl probably symbolises her own fears of being seen like a little
girl who cannot cope with living independantly.
Basements often link to negative feelings so its possible that the dream links
to her negative feelings and touchiness about failing.
Dream Symbol
BASEMENTS : "neagative feelings - the dreamer is sensitive about failing"
LITTLE GIRL : "The dreamer desperately wants to succeed in living on
her own and does not want to be seen as a little girl lost who cannot cope"
TORNADO : "changes in our lives - the dreamer coping with the stress
of living on her own and her fears that she may fail and end up back home"
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am going to live on my own for the first time. I would really hate
to have to go back home like a little girl who could not cope on her own."

THE DREAM I was at my school, and all of a sudden it was under attack
by an alligator. It seemed like I was getting a rush out of running from it.
It was HUGE. It was surprising that it fit through my school doors. I think
that my brain distorted and made the doors larger. Anyhow, while I was running
from it I ran into the gym and then I was instantly in some sort of battle.
It was a battle of magic abilities. It seemed that it was me who spun around
on my head making a sort of tornado spinning around me. It was amazing.
There was this one part where we were I was playing with a baby golden retriever
dog. It was very very cute! But then, the people who were trying to keep the
alligator from harming people, said they were going to use it to lure the
alligator to them. I was horrified and tried my best to not let them but in
the end I failed and when they put the little puppy in the water, it couldnt
swim and I looked away and Im pretty sure it died because the people looked
away like they were sad.
THE REALITY There was a very strong issue dogging the dreamer at this time.
Her boyfriend was about to move many miles away. Realistically this relationship
was now doomed.
THE INTERPRETATION Water in dreams often links to our subconscious minds.
So alligators in them show that we have a troubled mind. Some issue is biting
away at us. In most cases this is pretty easy to spot. Its a major emotional
issue eating away at us. In this case the dreamer mentioned that her boyfriend
was moving away. Thats a pretty important issue and the subject of the dream
seems settled. This dream is about how she is dealing with the issue of him
leaving.
Gyms in dreams are often symbolic of our mind and how we are thinking in athletic
and imaginative ways. They show our minds performing somersaults. Perhaps
they show the dreamers mind working over time thinking up scenarios where
they could continue their relationship. Indeed she perhaps wished for the
magical powers mentioned in the dream to suddenly allow her to stay with her
beloved boyfriend.
Often puppies in dreams are symbols of faithful and devoted relationships.
a puppy may represent a devoted son who follows his father about. In this
case perhaps the puppy refers to the wish that her boyfriend finds some way
of staying where he is so the relationship could continue.
Yet the puppy is bound to die. The dreamer realises that the thoughts going
through her mind are an overactive imagination. The relationship is doomed.
Often huge things in dreams refer to the outside world. They show us how our
thoughts and feelings are being shaped by the world around us. The dreamers
world was been devastated by the actions of others. It was not even her boyfriends
choice. She was powerless to react.
The tornado in the dream is symbolic of major change about to happen.
Dream Symbol
ALLIGATOR : "a situation you would rather avoid at all costs. Its an overwhelming
problem - in this case the dreamer knows that moving will end her relationship
with her boyfriend"
BATTLE : "a battle within your mind"
GYM : "keeping something healthy - in this case keeping her relationship fit
and healthy"
HUGE : "the outside world is having a major impact on your thoughts and feelings"
SWIM : "trying to get to a new situation - the dreamer wants to avoid losing
her boyfriend"
TORNADO : "major change in your life is coming up - in this case the dreamers
move to a new state"
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I cannot accept that my relationship with my boyfriend is over. I
know I have to move to a new state with my parents but there must be some
way of continuing the relationship

THE DREAM Firstly my head started buzzing and In my dream I was asking
to talk to the dead of Hurricane Katrina. A voice of a dead person come through
and it told me her name, I cant remember the name on waking. I then asked
this person her when she was born and then her spirit tried to speak through
me but my face became paralysed and I couldnt move my mouth. The buzzing
then got louder. Next in my dream I was looking into a mirror it didnt look
like me it looked like i was staring at another woman, all of a sudden my
body was taken quickly up in the air up over the stairs and landing and I
was spun round so fast, the fastest you could imagine, I was trying to grab
hold of the banister to stop the force from spinning me round and round, finally
I got hold of the bannister and managed to pull my self to the ground. After
that I felt my brain bouncing around in the back of my head where I had been
spun so quickly it was horrible and I woke up suddenly. when I woke up I still
felt a presence around me and I could hear scratching in my bedroom, it was
like someone was in my room making their presence known. I was to scared to
open my eyes just in case I seen a ghost. I held on to my husband next to
me in bed so I knew it was really happening and I was a wake at that point.
The outside security light came on and I could still hear scratching for about
10mins. After that I kept praying to god to get back to sleep and I drifted
off after a while. I never felt so scared in my life. Can anyone tell me what
this dream means please!!!
THE REALITY Before the dreamer went to bed she had been watching the news
of hurricane Katrina. She found it difficult to sleep straight away but when
she finally drifted off she had this nightmare.
THE INTERPRETATION Well this dream seems as if it was related in some way
to the news reports that she had been watching. That means that the events
there were intensely relevant to the dreamer. In this case the most likely
cause of the dream is that the dreamer may fear the same thing happening to
her. In many ways events appear on the TV and they are somehow divorced from
reality. All sorts of death and destruction take place every day yet the news
just continues on been ignored by most people. But sometimes a story will
touch us. In this case because of the sheer scale of the events. But also
because they happen so close to home. This happened in a city in the USA.
In one day society was reduced to nothing. Children were raped, looters were
rife. Society broke down. Its a shock to the system that the peaceful and
secure lives that we have can be so creully disturbed. Its a shock to our
complacent societies and minds.
The classic symbol here is the mirror. The mirror shows that the dreamer can
see something in the lives of others that is extremely relevant to her. But
for the grace of god it could have been her.
The names were also a good clue. Names are not tremendously important in themselves.
They are symbolic. They show that the real event has been brought to life
in a very specific way. The people involved are filmed and named on the TV
reports. The dreamer captures this by using names in her dream. That symbolises
how this news report had brought to life the whole event. It was not a series
of faceless victims but rather real people and real circumstances.
The tornado itself is also maybe symbolic. It maybe shows that the TV coverage
vastly changed her views. It was a whirlwind affecting the way that she sees
the world. It probably brings home the reality of the disaster and because
it happened in the USA the same thing could happen to the dreamer. It featured
real people that she could identify with and who were very much like herself.
The dream ended yet the images still came. When we hear and see things after
waking that is called hypnopompic imagery. It maybe shows that the dream was
extremely significant. In this case it showed that disasters are real events
and affect real people - they are not some news item that affect people thosands
of miles away on different continents.
Dream Symbol
BED : "something you can identify with in an intensely personal way - hurricane
Katrina "
GHOST : "an intense scarey feeling - an eerie feeling - connected with hurricane
Katrina "
MIRROR : "the dreamer sees the hurricanes victims but realises it could have
been her"
STAIRS : "coming to a conclusion - the dreamer realises just how bad things
were and what happened "
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am just beginning to realise how bad Hurricane Katrina was. I watched
the victims on TV but when I saw them I realised that it could quite easily
been me. This didnt happen in some far away country. These people were Americans
just like me. Its scarey".

DREAM SYMBOL STUDIES : TORNADOES
TORNADOS : Hurricanes can be symbolic of extreme stress in your life
and an inability to relax. The skies in dreams generally link to the future
and the possibility of change. So if they are disturbed then there is no clear
outlook for how things will be. But tornados may symbolise lots of things.
They may link to bad things that are about to happen and problems that you
are anticipating.
KEY WORDS(Pick a quote which captures your feelings right now. Think especially
of the day before the dream) :
- "uncertain about the future"
- "coping with all these changes in my life"
- "a tantrum"
- "an inability to relax"
- "been told so many things"
- "yesterdays weather forecast"
- "starting to feel ill"
