DREAM STUDIES : Real dreams with tidal waves and tsunamis in them
---------------------------
THE DREAM I am laying down in the sand, sad, playing with the sand and I was thinking deep. Then I remembered my little brother was inside the house, so I called him because I remembered he liked to play with water. Then I noticed the water was looking weird, in some places was deep followed by other places where the water didn't even move, I am looking at the water when I started noticing the waves that were coming were not normal waves, they were bigger and aggressive, it was then when I realized a tsunami was about to come . I took my little brother and I went into the house (which was by the sea). the waves were increasing and increasing. The waves started to hit the my house more aggressively then I realized my house wasn't safe ( it was a wood house), I looked around for a safer place, and all the way to the left of my house was an elevation of rocks, I knew rocks were safer than wood. I made sure that, my little brother, my mother and father got there by the next wave. Not long after the waves started to hit . I overheard someone saying "45 minutes" so I jumped to the conclusion he meant 45 minutes walk to safety. So I told my father "45 minutes walk and we'll be safe". He said "lets start to walk". Right after he said that, the real tsunami wave was rising .. a really big one. It was then when I looked around and I knew we needed to hold to something it was not going to move when the aggressiveness of the water hits it. I looked at the big wave .. and then I woke up.

THE REALITY The dreamer had been in a turbulent relationship. One minute she was talking to him and the next they would stop talking. This pattern had continued on for over a year. The day before the dream the couple agreed that they had to talk about this situation and discuss their feelings. Her boyfriend told her that she had to decide if they should continue in an unhealthy relationship or just let go of and move on. The dreamer decided to stop talking to her boyfriend and cut all contact with him. But the dreamer was still confused about if she had made the right choice. She cut off all contact with him.

THE INTERPRETATION The day before this dream the dreamer had made a huge decision. Its on days like this that dream analysis becomes suddenly a lot easier. Surely any dream she has is related in some way to this situation. Its just a matter of understanding the dream symbolism.

A dream should link to our conceptual feelings or thoughts. We know how we feel so its a matter of comparing what has happened and seeing how a dream can capture our thoughts and feelings.

This dream seems completely divorced from real life yet it perfectly captures her emotional state. Throughout the dream she is trying to get to a place of safety. This easily translates into real life thoughts. She is trying to get to a place of emotional safety. Its not about her life being in danger more about her wanting to reach a state of emotional security.

The dream also seems to mirror reality in other ways. There seems to be a sense of discussion at times - the father agrees that this is the right choice to make. It mimics reality in that a decision is made and agreed upon.

Symbolic Meanings
SAFE PLACE : "wanting to reach a state of emotional security - feelings reassured and happy - making the right decision"
TIDAL WAVE : "Wondering how the break up will impact her"
WAVES : "symbolic of the turbulence in the relationship"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I split up with my boyfriend yesterday. I still have major doubts about if I am making the right decision. Should we stop seeing each other entirely or try to remain friends? ".

See how the Symbolic Meanings above weave together to capture the dreamer feelings as she broke up with her boyfriend.

DREAM TIP : Dreams deal with emotional concepts forming in our minds. Think up some quotes which capture your feelings from the day before such as - 'I feel as if I cannot trust my sister any more', or 'I am starting to enjoy work much more now',or 'I really should phone my mother up'. Its likely that such intuitions will link heavily to a dreams meaning.
------------------------------------
THE DREAM In the dream, I am in this hotel room, watching the news, and there is a story on about a disastrous tidal wave that swept through Africa. In the dream I think wow that's horrible, and go to the window of my room, and I can see a wall of water far into the distance, so I grab my son, and my shoes, and run to tell everyone we have to leave now. Everyone is busy getting drunk, and getting high, and they don't listen, including my mother, I begged and pleaded and cried, pointing out that they would die if they didn't come with me, but no one cared, they all just laughed and acted as though I was overreacting. So I put on my shoes, picked up my little boy, and started down the stair of the hotel. When my foot hit the last step, I was suddenly outside, running for the hills, and reaching the hillside, start scrambling up pulling my son with me, (Think Elijah Wood and LeiLei Sobieski in Deep Impact), and I get to the top with my son and look back. I can see my family, sitting there in plastic lawn chairs drinking, watching as though it can't bother them when the wave crashes over them and heads my way. The wave stops at the peak of the hillside, and my son and I only got our toes wet. Then I woke up.

THE REALITY The day before the dreamer had been to a wake. Her uncle had died in jail. The dreamer had been reflecting on her family. Although she loved her Uncle her was a drug dealer and gun dealer. Of all the people at the wake the dreamer was virtually the only one(barring those of school age) who had not been in jail. Many had alcohol and drug issues. The dreamer had been thinking about the need for salvation and the need to live a good and honest life.

THE INTERPRETATION Many dreams relate to the day before and views being formed then. Obviously this dream could relate to her feelings at the wake of her uncle. These were of a very religious nature and showed that she very much feeling the need for her family to reform and sweep away the evil path that they were living. Its noticable that the dreamer and her son are left untouched by this flood. That symbolises her belief that they good will be saved and the evil will be punished. Those who live a life of sin will be swept away. But she does get her toes wet so in some ways she is aware that she is not without sin. She had taken drugs and only escaped jail because she was not caught. But the difference is that she takes salvation seriously.

The dream takes place in Africa. This dreamer was African american so Africa is a symbol of her heritage and her family roots.

In the dream she is ignored and ridiculed. That surely mimics real life where she feels her message is not taken seriously.

Symbolic Meanings
AFRICA : "The dreamers african american roots - her family as a whole that is traced back to africa"
LAUGHING : "A belief that her religious views are not taken seriously"
SON : "her belief in the children and the innocent"
TIDAL WAVE : "all those who do not seek salvation will be swept away"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I had to attend a funeral yesterday. But I realised that virtually all of the congregation had been in prison or done drugs. They have got to realise the importance of religion and save themselves. Otherwise they will be swept away. I know I am not without sin but I have sought the forgiveness of the Lord".

THE DREAM - I am at a beach. I am studying things. I am watching the breakers. There is a surfer with me. I mention the van that is moving spectacularly in the water. There are some spectacular waves. Then the surfer runs off, he is scared by this massive wave thats coming our way. It looks more like a tidal wave. The tsunami hits the beach. Then it hits - the beach by the way was not the beach it was near a indoor swimming pool.

THE REALITY The previous day the dreamer had been posting on the Internet and was in conversation with this male. The dreamer had originally imagined this person to be extremely cool. But then decided that this was an absolute exaggeration unsupported by the facts. The entire basis for this person being cool was that he had a very cool name on the Internet. The dreamer thought about this for a short time and realised that this was maybe a common mistake. That you think of someone on the internet being cool when actually they were probably a computer nerd.

THE INTERPRETATION Water often symbolises energy and flows of belief. In this case it symbolised the conception that the dreamer made with this other person. But after a bit of quiet reflection the dreamer recognised that this was probably a false perception. The tidal wave can therefor be seen a some thoughts or feelings getting out of hand. They are not supported by the facts of the situation and therefor prone to major changes. They are thoughts that like the waves are changeable and fluid.

Symbolic Meanings
BEACH : " a difference between your feelings and the reality - the dreamer realises he has made an unrealistic assessment of this person on the internet"
TIDAL WAVE : "an assessment based on feelings - likely to be swept away"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I have been talking to this guy on the internet. I amagined him to be so cool. But then I thought for a moment last night and felt that there is no real reason to suppose he is cool. He is probably a total geek"

DREAM TIP : Think of a Tsunami's in a dream as representing a word or phrase such as 'swept away'. Then think of several quotes which capture your intuitional feelings from the day before such as 'I was tired at work yesterday. We had a huge rush of customers' , 'I am not getting along with my sister right now' or 'My foot seems to have healed well'. Now look through those quotes and see the words 'swept away' seem relevant within those quotes.
--------------------------
THE DREAM It was raining heavily and my friend was carrying an umbrella walking on the pavement. It was flooded. Suddenly she tripped and fell into a deep narrow drain. I lost sight of her quickly. I wanted to jump in to save her but the water was too deep. I thought I had lost her. Then the flood subsided and I saw her lying unconscious at the bottom of the drain, still submerged in water. I pulled her out and tried to resuscitate her. To my relief, she regained consciousness. Then she told me she lost her shoes in the water so I went to find them for her.

THE REALITY The previous night the dreamer had visited her friend who had told her she had been going through a series of bad luck that year.

THE INTERPRETATION Most dreams are about ourselves and issues affecting our mental health. However, we can dream about people close to us. If we sense that something is wrong with a friend we will dream about that. At the time of this dream the dreamer did not have any strong emotional issues affecting her so its fair to say that this issue was about her friend.

Water is a symbol of the unconscious. It can show that your mind is activated towards some issue - in this case it shows that the dreamer maybe can sense such unconscious feelings in her friend. In this case the dream also features rain and flooding. These are strong indicators of emotional feelings. Rain is symbolic of anxiety. Flooding shows that the mind is flooded and overcome with thoughts and feelings. In that sense it is impossible to make a judgment.

The main point of the dream is that the dreamer is trying to help her friend. That shows that she is trying to offer emotional support. But in this case its difficult. That simply shows that the dreamer has maybe tried to alter her friends mood but that has failed. That is the simple message of the dream.

The shoes are the main symbol. Shoes are symbolic of how we travel in life. They therefor symbolise our general views about who we are and how we hope to progress towards our goals. They link with our confidence and self belief. So in this sense the dreamer is trying to help her friend find a direction to get out of her present emotional state.

Symbolic Meanings
DRAIN : "feeling drained"
FLOOD : "having to devote some energy to immediate emergencies - overwhelmed by problems"
JUMP IN : "the dreamer wants to help support her friend"
LOST : "unable to see what direction you need to go in life"
SHOES : "your direction in life"
UMBRELLA : "shelter from some emotional trauma"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I visited a friend yesterday. She has been having some bad luck. I think she is overwhelmed by it all"

DREAM TIP : The link between dreams and the day before is really very strong. Thats no coincidence. During the day we store up all thoughts in short term memory banks. Then at night we begin to transfer these thoughts and integrate them into long term emotions. So dreams then will tend to concentrate on the day before and on ways in which our emotions have altered.
-------------------------
THE DREAM It started out with me, my mom and nan-nan at the beach. I left them there and my daughter and I were sock skating through a store. Then she turned into my friend Laura when she was a little girl. (She's 25 now, but I used to baby sit her when I was 16 and 17 and she was 6 and 7) and she wanted me to carry her and I told her 'the thing about kids is, they get heavy.' but I sort of tucked her under my arm and started skating really fast. Then she disappeared and I was outside. I was on top of a big mountain and I had real skates on and I was racing downhill. I was racing my friends Cate, Allie and Karen. Cate was winning. She was far ahead of us and we noticed that the road was 'bottoming out' and flooding. Cate was getting closer to it and we yelled at her to come back. She heard us and started back uphill. The water kept rising and rising. Allie said 'is it the sea? it must be the sea." We looked around and the ocean was just rising higher and higher. Not like the tsunami crashing. The water level just kept rising. It was gaining on Cate and just before she reached us, the water got her. We asked her if she can swim and she said no. I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward us. Then we all held hands and the water got us all. We were swimming uphill toward higher ground of course. How we stayed afloat with roller skates on while we were all holding hands, I have no clue. Then I remembered that I had left my mom and nan-nan down on the beach and that they must have surely drowned by now. I let my head go underwater. I wanted to die. Allie squeezed my hand. I pulled my head up and said 'my nan-nan' and they all understood. Then I was on the beach again. I was looking for my mom and nan-nan. I found my nan-nan lying face down in the sand. She was wearing her dark red house coat and she wasn't breathing. I turned her over and told her to breathe and she started to breath. I was so relieved and I held her in my arms but started looking around for my mom. And I saw another nan-nan. She was wearing an old house dress and she wasn't breathing.

THE REALITY The day of the dream there was a severe thunderstorm where the dreamers nan-nan lives. By the time the dreamer had got in touch with her the storm had passed. Her nan-nan knew nothing about the storm. She said her dog was acting a bit strange and wanted to sit next to her. But as the nan-nan is half deaf both this death omen of her granddaughter and the storm passed totally unnoticed.

THE INTERPRETATION Often premonitions will come true on the very day of the dream. In this case the dream captured not the event but the dreamers overreaction to a storm. She was frantically worried. In symbolic form the dream captured this perfectly.

Firstly the dream featured the issue of baby-sitting. That perfectly matched real life as the dreamer was frantically trying to look after the best interest of her elderly Gran. It was extremely accurate as well as the baby-sitting also dealt with someone who was older. The girl the dreamer used to baby-sit was now beyond being tucked under her arms.

Waves in dreams and violent moving water symbolize feelings and thoughts which are out of control and liable to change. In this case this perfectly matched the symbols. The dreamers feelings changed very abruptly. She was worrying for no good reason. It was an event which the dreamers nan-nan did not even notice!

Most important the dream dealt with the worries about her nan-nan and that matched real life.

Symbolic Meanings
BABY-SIT : "protecting someone from trouble - the dreamer wants to protect her Nan who cannot cope with the storm"
CAR : "your direction in day to day life"
DROWN : "overwhelmed by issue - unable to manage"
LITTLE GIRL : "not in control of the situation - her gran is unable to cope with the situation"
TSUNAMI : "exaggerations in your mind - quickly changing opinions - getting carried away with thoughts"
TSUNAMI : "the dreamer fears her Nan will be swept away by the storm"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I think that this dream was a premonition of the day of the dream. I was scared for my grans safety as the weather was very bad where she lives. I did not think she would cope. But actually she was safely tucked up and did not even hear the storms because she is deaf."

DREAM TIP : Dreams use associations. So think carefully through a dream. A little phrase or anything may jog your memory about something that has just happened. The facial expression on some character within a dream may mimic the way someone acted the day before. Just look for odd little connections. If you spot one then its likely that the dream links to some intuitions linked to those symbols.
----------------------
THE DREAM In this dream I was laying on the beach where I grew up and I heard a noise that sounded like a train coming. I thought it was a huge wave coming and I ducked my head down into the sand. It never came. I looked up and there wasn't any water anywhere to be seen. Others on the beach looked confused, but I picked up my stuff and started to run. I went home (but not my home) and grabbed my daughter who was there with a co-worker of mine. In this dream my co-worker and I were together as a couple, but in the process of splitting up. I told him to get out and drive west, not east, bacause a Tidal Wave was coming. My daughter and I got in the car and started to drive. We saw water flooding ahead of us, it was murky. We turned around and went back home. My co-worker was still there, getting his wallet out of the safe and then put stuff in the safe. We all went upstairs, but no water came to the house. My co-worker was hanging out in a seperate room and I was playing cards with some friends. I looked up and he let in his ex-wife and closed the door. I started to cry uncontrollably. Huge sobs. Next thing I knew I was downstairs, talking to my boyfriend who was naked and we were getting ready to go to bed. I was complaining that my elbows were dry and I needed some of his lotion he was putting on. He aked me what time I needed to get up. I told him 7:30. He asked me to set the alarm for 6:45. I then woke up. When I looked at the clock it was 6:42. At exactly 6:45 my boyfriend called to say good morning.

THE REALITY The dreamer had been suffering anxiety at work. She normally enjoyed work but recently things had started getting stressful. The actual day of the dream was particularly stressful.

THE INTERPRETATION The entry point into this dream has certainly got to be the alarm clock. The coincidence of the dreamer been phoned up by her boyfriend shortly after dreaming about him discussing alarm clocks is too much to ignore. This was a premonition of this event. Often premonitions will be about the actual day of the dream. In this case its worth looking more closely to see other evidence to link the dream to the actual day of the dream.

The dream also involves work. The co-worker is there as a partner but also in the dream they are on the verge of splitting up. Thats a good indication that the dream links with work. It captures the current state of her emotions as she was finding work more stressful. The previously happy and commited relationship she had with work was now starting to wane.

The dreamer indeed said that the water which stopped her driving very much reminded of the feelings she had on the day of the dream.

Waves in dreams are very much symbolic of feelings that have got out of control. They show that feelings are starting to become facts in your mind. The land symbolises the grounded reality of your existsence. So if the water invades the land then we cannot distinguish between what is fact and what is feeling. Thats very much the case in extreme stress as we start to misinterpret small events as facts. The flooding shows that we are overwhelmed with feelings.

However, the water stays out of the house. Houses are often symbolic of our own approach. So thats a good sign. So it shows that the dreamer manages to remain composed and maintain her approach even though feelings are strarting to get on top of her.

The first phase of the dream is also important. The train is a symbol of fixed vision. The train cannot stop so maybe that symbolises the problems that the dreamer encountered. It was as if she had been hit by a train.

Symbolic Meanings
CARDS : "the hand that is dealt to you - right now the luck is not with the dreamer. Things are going badly at work"
CO-WORKER : "a thought about work - in this case there were pressing issues at work which the dream is obviously about"
FLOOD : "have to devote some energy to immediate emergencies"
TIDAL WAVE : "quickly changing feelings - emotions are overcoming you"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I have always enjoyed work but right now things have become really stressful."

THE DREAM We were in Miami (still me and my mom), when we got word that there was a massive Tsunami headed toward miami . Everyone was scattering and running around. We went to a few different homes, where someone finally let us inside. We were watching the news and watching the radar track the movement of the wave. Finally it hit, we watched this HUGE wave come crashing into the whole shoreline. It actually scared the shit out of me in the dream! My mom and I made sure we had our life jackets on , and made sure we would survive! And we did.

At this point in the dream, the person I had been identifying as my mom, changes to my friends mother. Now me and my friends mother ran and hit the street, walking around looking for a safer place to stay. Still, very detirmined to survive and make it. I started to get the feeling that my friends mother (who is a cop and was in the military) wasnt planning on leaving anytime soon, when all I wanted to do was go home. She wanted to stay in Miami for a few days and enjoy herself after all the drama was over! Then word came in another tidal wave is on it's way. For some reason both of us got on a train (which wouldnt make any sense cause there wouldnt be any electricity) , but we did, and then we got off. I felt a moving train was like , the most unsafe place to be. The second wave hit, and we once again survived. Everytime I thought about my actual mom, I knew somehow she was safe upstate with my dad.

Then the character of my friends mom, now transforms into Kendra Wilkinson from the girls-next-door on the E! Network. For some wierd reason in the middle of this way, Kendra Wilkinson stops at the home of a famous rap group, and shows off her knowledge of they're musical talent, and status in the entertainment industry.

THE REALITY The dreamer is an actor and record producer. He had just completed an audition for a major role in a film. He was also contemplating moving to Los Angeles.

THE INTERPRETATION Dream interpreting is never easy. Dreams though tend to link to day to day events. If something major is happening in your mind you can trace it sometimes in your dreams. If you get conflict in real life then look for symbols expressing that conflict. Its as simple as that.

Sometimes a dream symbol may link to one of a number of different possible real life issues. Here a tidal wave could symbolize one of two things. The dreamer was waiting for news of an audition for a major role. A tidal wave could possibly symbolize some news awaiting. Auditions results are like tidal waves in that they can knock you off your feet and sweep you away(emotionally speaking).

The dream does feature the dreamers mother extensively. So in this case the dream maybe about the dreamers decision to move to Los Angeles. He is thinking through various consequences. If he went to Los Angeles then that would be like a tidal wave in his emotions. He would not have his mother around so much - he is very close to her.

This explanation seems to fit best. The mother figure transforms into someone else(his mothers friend). Therefor he is possibly thinking that things would not be so bad. He would still be in contact with his mother. He would also develop new relationships which would take the place of his mother on a day to day basis.

The later portion of the dream could link to the dreamers belief in himself. Kendra Wilkinson appears talking about music. This transformation could link to the transformation in opportunities that going to Los Angeles would bring.

Ultimately we can never truly tell what a dream means. If there are two competing explanations which both seem to fit then its difficult to tell which is truly right. There is no correct answer at the back of the book. Just possible ways in which reality fits the dream symbols.
Symbolic Meanings
TIDAL WAVE : "A tidal wave in your emotions. The possible effect emotionally ofmoving to LA. Away from close family."

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I am contemplating moving to Los Angeles. I am very close to my mom. If I move to LA then she will not be around. But I really do have to follow my dream. I am sure that when I move to LA there would be other people I could develop a close relationship with. "

----------------------
DREAM TIP : The fact is that dreams represent your thoughts. So simply work the process in reverse. Look for evidence of your thoughts in your dreams. If for instance the day before was very stressful then look for evidence of that stress. Exactly which symbols could represent that stress.
----------------------------------------
THE DREAM I am in a harbor. The sun is shining and its a nice day. Then suddenly the winds picks up and a storm starts. I can see people trying to desperately get to the shore. The seas are very choppy. I am trying to save my granddad. I then realise the fear of tidal waves. I desperately try to get to some high ground. I am at the top of the cliff yet I then see the tidal wave come. Its huge and will surely sweep us all away.

THE REALITY The dreamer had been retired for a few years. He was living a fairly sheltered life but had been neglecting his health. Now things were in danger of getting out of hand. The night before the dream he was worried about the state of his health.

THE INTERPRETATION The dreamer had been thinking about his own health the night before. He was really very worried. So in such circumstances its natural that this dream reflected that worry. The tidal wave represents the feelings that his health was now in danger of being swept away by forces too powerful to resist.

Symbolic Meanings
GRANDFATHER: "feeling old and ill"
HARBOR: "sheltered from danger - the dreamer had retired so was not realising how badly ill he was becoming. He had been sheltered from the worst problems because he was not having to go to work"
TIDAL WAVE: "an irresistible force - overwhelming loss of health"

DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer - "I have not really realised how bad my health has become. If I was still at work I would have spotted how bad my health was becoming and been forced to do something."

---------------------------
DREAM TIP : Do not try to impose simplistic meanings on dreams. Its easy to see a tidal wave in your dream and say that you feel overwhelmed by feelings about something right now. Dreams use symbols in complex ways. Think of the following phrases - 'I was overcome with emotions by what she said yesterday', or 'I wish I could sweep away all those bad feelings that my boss is generating in me', or 'My grandmother cannot seem to cope with any major problems nowadays'. These different quotes use metaphors in different ways and some do not even apply to the dreamer but to people they care about. Dream symbols tend to build such rich and varied meanings.

DREAM STUDIES : TIDAL WAVES

TIDAL WAVES : A tidal wave is a very strong symbol and can simply indicate that there is something stronger and more powerful that will just sweep us away without warning. It may symbolise our wish to protect some vulnerable family member. It may link to some larger force such as need to follow the true path of religion.

But tidal waves are also symbolic of our feelings. They may show that we are overcome with strong feelings on an issue. The sea in dreams symbolises the feelings we have and the land the facts about some issue. For the sea to sweep over the land shows that we are making very emotional decisions, possibly based on insufficient evidence.

KEY WORDS(Pick a quote which captures your feelings right now. Think especially of the day before the dream) :
- "totally unable to cope"
- "I am simply unable to resist such a strong force"
- "they will be swept away"
- "Its a force which is stronger than me"
- "My health is spiralling out of control"
- "jumping to conclusions"
- "overcome with feelings"
